Monroe Charter Academy is a tuition-free public charter school offering a Classical Education rooted in the liberal arts tradition. Monroe Charter Academy seeks a Middle School Social Studies Teacher who will inspire students to explore history not just as a sequence of events, but as a study of human nature, virtue, leadership, and the development of enduring ideas. The ideal candidate will bring history to life through primary sources, classical texts, and thoughtful dialogue, guiding students to see themselves as inheritors and stewards of Western civilization.
Teach social studies courses for grades 6–8, which may include Ancient History, Medieval & Renaissance History, and Early American History.
Employ a Classical Education approach, using primary sources, historical narratives, and Socratic dialogue.
Emphasize the moral and civic lessons of history, drawing connections between past and present.
Guide students through foundational texts, speeches, and documents (e.g., The Federalist Papers, Aristotle’s Politics, excerpts from Livy, Plutarch, etc.).
Encourage memorization of key historical dates, speeches, geography, and documents as tools for cultural literacy.
Develop students’ critical thinking and written expression through historical analysis and essay writing.
Set and uphold high standards for academic achievement and character development.
Work collaboratively with faculty to ensure curriculum alignment and thematic integration across subjects.
Communicate consistently and professionally with parents and school leadership.
Participate in faculty development and ongoing training in Classical Education philosophy and practice.
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in History, Political Science, Education, or a related field
Valid state teaching certification or eligibility for certification
Strong grasp of classical content and Western historical tradition
Commitment to the principles and methods of Classical Education
Preferred:
Experience teaching in a classical, charter, or liberal arts school setting
Familiarity with Core Knowledge, Hillsdale, or similar classical curricula
Background in classical literature, philosophy, or political theory
Experience with Socratic teaching methods and primary source instruction
A love for history, civic virtue, and classical thought
Ability to foster a classroom culture of inquiry, order, and moral reflection
Strong communication and classroom management skills
Intellectual humility and desire for continuous personal and professional growth
Passion for forming the hearts and minds of young people
