Position Summary:

Monroe Charter Academy is seeking a dedicated Middle School Science Teacher who can deliver engaging, rigorous science instruction within a classical framework. This teacher will guide students through the natural world using observation, logic, and discovery, emphasizing wonder, order, and clarity in scientific thought.


Responsibilities:

  • Teach science courses for grades 6–8, which may include Earth Science, Life Science, and Physical Science.

  • Use a classical approach to science instruction, integrating observation, experimentation, natural philosophy, and historical scientific texts.

  • Encourage students to engage in the scientific method with intellectual curiosity and moral responsibility.

  • Integrate interdisciplinary connections with math, history, and literature where appropriate.

  • Employ classical pedagogy such as Socratic dialogue, narration, and inquiry-based instruction.

  • Foster habits of attention, wonder, order, and precision in students.

  • Maintain high academic and behavioral standards rooted in virtue and self-discipline.

  • Regularly assess student learning through written work, oral presentation, lab investigations, and formal assessments.

  • Collaborate with colleagues to support the development of a vertically aligned classical science curriculum.

  • Communicate consistently and professionally with parents and staff about student progress and school activities.

  • Participate in faculty development, mentoring, and ongoing training in Classical Education.


Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Education, or a related field

  • Teaching license or eligibility for certification in the state of North Carolina

  • Commitment to Classical Education philosophy

  • Strong classroom management and communication skills

Preferred:

  • Experience teaching middle school science in a classical, liberal arts, or charter school environment

  • Familiarity with classical texts, natural philosophy, and scientific pioneers (e.g., Aristotle, Galileo, Newton)

  • Background in laboratory science and hands-on instruction

  • Passion for instilling a sense of wonder and stewardship in students regarding the natural world
