8th Grade Social Studies Teacher (2025-26 school year)
The 8th grade Social Studies teacher, in collaboration with the grade level team and the English Language Arts & Social Studies Instructional Coach, will create a challenging, literacy-rich instructional environment. Endeavor’s candidate will provide hands-on, experiential learning opportunities that foster critical thinking, literacy skills, and life-long citizenship.
Curriculum Planning and Implementation
- Follow the NC Standard Course of Study for North Carolina and United States History and the College Board’s Historical Thinking Skills
- Teach four 65 minute blocks of 8th grade social studies utilizing differentiated, hands-on activities and simulations
- Create a literacy-rich environment through the use of primary and secondary sources, charts and graphs, art, and political cartoons to promote critical thinking and analytical skills
- Provide students with historical knowledge that encompasses a wealth of perspectives
- Establish a safe classroom that promotes civic engagement and discourse
- Facilitate inquiry based lessons following the Inquiry Design Model
- Develop effective lesson plans and instructional materials
- Lead morning office hours
Classroom Management
- Establish classroom processes and procedures which teach independence, responsibility, and respect and maintaining a classroom environment which promotes these traits on a daily basis
- Foster an environment for all students to communicate and collaborate with one another
- Nurture a familial environment which aligns with Endeavor’s mission and values
Student Assessment
- Use both formative and summative assessment strategies to evaluate students’ academic growth, including North Carolina’s EOG’s
- Student assessments should include the use of primary and secondary sources, formal writing, analysis of charts, graphs, and political cartoons, and historical thinking skills
Differentiated Instruction
- Utilize data driven instruction to differentiate learning for all learners
- Create lesson plans and materials
- Embed a wealth of resources to make learning relevant and meaningful
Parent and Community Engagement
- Plan the annual overnight trip to Washington D.C. for the grade level
- Communicate frequently and effectively with parents
- Guide weekly morning meeting group focused on character and citizenship
Professional Development and Collaboration
- Collaborate with the Instructional Coach and Middle School Director
- Collaborate with Exceptional Children’s Case Manager and Interventionists as needed to adapt instruction and meet student needs
- Collaborate with the grade level and subject area teams to vertically align instruction and skills
- Stay abreast of new trends and strategies emerging in the field
Basic Qualifications Required
- Currently NC certified
- Experience in middle school social studies
- Experience with literacy and/or technology is preferred
- 3 professional references that can speak to your success as an educator
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
- Strong knowledge of social studies, history, or economics
- Knowledge of a variety of assessment strategies
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Effective interpersonal skills
